1962

Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA flight center opened in 1962. Bhutan’s very first paved road, connecting Phuentsholing, an Indian border town, to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, was completed the same year. TWA launched in 1930. The first commercial flights to Bhutan did not start until 1983, fifty three years later. We watched the Beetles on Ed Sullivan in 1964. Television was not introduced in Bhutan until 1999. Margaret and I leave in the morning from the TWA hotel at JFK, on our way to Bhutan via Tokyo and Bangkok. We leave Saarinen en route to Shangri la, transiting from a postmodern society to one just now confronting the modern. Wish us good fortune. We’ll keep you posted.
