Our home away from home

23 Hebi-Lam

Our apartment is provided by Health Volunteer Overseas. As with all buildings in Thimphu, it is limited to six or fewer stories in height and built in the traditional Bhutanese style, though with concrete and steel for earthquake stability, instead of the traditional wood and rammed earth. More on construction to follow. Our balcony is the one with the green and white towels on the line.

Door to Balcony from bedroom, viewed from living room
Learning to sleep on 2 inches of mat, but a very comfortable bedroom
Highly recommend the Sawyer complete water purification system
View to the North from Balcony. University student hostel on the left.
“On demand” hot water tank (plug it in before you need it).
We’ve added a few small appliances. Laundry is done in buckets, hung on the balcony to dry. The same all through the city.
View to the Southeast. Someday we’ll have the stamina to climb to the temple on the hill.
Breakfast with a view to the East
Earthquake protection amulet attached to front door.

We’re loving it so far!

  1. This looks beautiful. Have you adjusted to the altitude? I would love to know about your work (also about local food and entertainment)
