Cheri Monastery

Back in October, we combined a hike to Cheri Monastery with that to Tango Monastery (see post of October 24). We started the one hour hike by crossing a beautiful covered bridge over a fast moving river, reaching a chorten and Mani wall that overlooks a popular picnic ground. Picnickers were everywhere, some dry picnics, some wet with food cooked over fires. Horses and dogs wandered about while footballers played. Monks wandered by as did people carrying supplies up the mountain. It was a peaceful and happy scene all ’round.

Margaret, Sally, Karma and our driver. The driver’s wife made us a wonderful picnic lunch.

Himalayan goral as we approach the monastery. Gorals are endangered species
Black mountain goats. We think these might be Himalayan serows.

Cheri Monastery

Cheri Monastery was built in 1620 by Shabdrung Nygawang Namyel, the unifier of Bhutan. The relics of Shabdrung’s father are stored in a large silver chorten within the temple.
