The United Nations categorizes Bhutan as a Least Developed Country, with a per capita income of less than $2444 USD. Health care is free and a constitutionally guaranteed right but resources are limited. As a Health Volunteer Overseas physician, the entire cost of my three months of teaching in Bhutan is up to me, the air travel, apartment rent, daily expenses and any texts or supplies I bring to leave behind. And while we’re in Bhutan, I am giving up any opportunity for compensated employment at home. Margaret and I loved our first trip to Bhutan and saw quite a lot on our days off, as this blog attests to, but most of the time we were working. It’s a big commitment on our part and an expensive one. Last visit, we were able to provide nearly $2500 in textbooks that would otherwise been out of reach financially by the physicians and students I worked with. These were paid for by generous donations from friends and family, though this left nothing to offset our expenses.
Please consider a donation to support our efforts to improve mental health care in Bhutan. All donations go to Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) and are fully tax deductible. You will received a record of your donation from HVO. Receipts for our qualified expenses will then be submitted to HVO and we will be reimbursed up to the amount collected.
