Six years ago, one of our first outings after arriving in Bhutan was to Taktsang, the iconic Tiger’s Nest, with our good friends Pabi and Kinley. As our final volunteer visit to Bhutan comes to a close, we decided to go back for another look.

Halfway up the trail, there is now a beautiful cafe with a view of the temple and comfortable restrooms, another wonderful example of the improvements made during the pandemic.

The trail to the monastery has improved dramatically in the years since our first visit. During the COVID pandemic, unemployed tour guides, along with many other Bhutanese, received an income from the King’s Kidu fund. Consistent with the national spirit we see manifest everywhere here, the guides, in return, volunteered to reroute and refurbish the trail system.

Here at last, winded and a bit dizzy from the altitude, but ready to visit the four temples. A wonderful way to conclude our travels in Shangri-la.
Amazing! The climb looks intimidating, but the scenery is spectacular — genuine Shangri La. I hope this journey becomes a book so that others can share the experience and the insights it must have generated.
