The wonderful staff of JDWNRH Department of Psychiatry outside the soon to be opened PEMA Center, a 60 bedded psychiatric unit and outpatient department. Long in coming and well deserved, this beautiful state of the art facility demonstrates Bhutan’s commitment to both patients and providers.
Dr. Chencho Dorji and the staff of the PEMA Rehab Center, a new substance use recovery center operating with a therapeutic community model, another wonderful example of Bhutan’s commitment to mental health.
Drs. Dochung, Tshewang, Kuensang and Janiesa, the dedicated psychiatric resident staff of JDWNRH
The incomparable staff and long term residents of Bhutan Suites

Margaret and I thank each and everyone of you for your friendship, generosity and dedication.

The Third Annual PEMA Symposium where I presented on the potential adverse impacts of digital media exposure on maternal/child bonding and on the early childhood foundations of empathy, theory of mind and compassion. The Queen, Jetsun Pema Wangchuck, the moving force of all that the PEMA does, is center on the red carpet. Dasho Dechen, head of the PEMA Secretariat and former Minister of Health, who facilitated our visit to Bhutan is to her right. The Prime Minister is to the Queen’s left. Margaret is in the blue to Dasho’s right. I am on the right in the last row.

It has been and honor and a privilege to play even a small part in the mental health journey of modern Bhutan.
