We’re going to Bhutan. Join us on our journey.

We live comfortable and privileged lives. The risk that comes with comfort?  Complacency. So it’s time to shake things up.

We’re going to Bhutan. We’re going to work hard.  We’re going to play hard (if we have the time).  We’ll be immersed in a new culture and challenged in ways we can’t imagine. We would like you to come along for the ride.  And support us in any way you can.

Steve is a Psychiatrist, practicing now in the U.S. for nearly 35 years and moving toward retirement. Bhutan has only three psychiatrists, but they are training more.   That’s where he fits in.     Margaret is a Clinical Social Worker, retired after a wide range of administrative and clinical jobs.  Bhutan has no social workers.  A new palliative care program is taking shape and, with her experience with Hospice, Margaret can help get it off the ground.

We have the skills they need and the time and means to apply them as volunteers with Health Volunteers Overseas.  We’re bolstered and inspired by the moral and financial support of many caring friends and family members.

Join us.  Learn as we learn.  About a people grounded in centuries of Buddhist tradition.  About a system of governance that places the happiness of the people above all else and views environmental preservation as a cornerstone of that happiness.  And observe with us the struggles and successes of a country and a people in transition.  Of a mythical Shangri La emerging into a modern world.

Thanks for coming along,

Steven J. Sonnenberg, MD, FAWM
